NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh is anticipating a quiet transfer deadline day today, insisting he will not be adding anyone else to his squad.

Edinburgh snapped up free agent Ryan Burge on Friday and he is in contention to make his debut at home to Mansfield Town on Saturday.

And the Exiles boss, who saw his side battle back to draw 1-1 at Scunthorpe United at the weekend, is not expecting any movement in or out of Rodney Parade before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

“We’ve brought in Ryan and that will be us done in the transfer window now,” he said. “We won’t bring anyone else in.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if someone was looking at my players. We’ve got a fantastic group here but I don’t think we’ll be accepting any offers for our players,” he added.

“My phone will be on because I’m a nice guy but I think everyone here at the moment is solely interested in succeeding with Newport County.”

Edinburgh is delighted to have secured the signing of Burge, who helped Port Vale win League Two last season.

“Ryan is a young man who has travelled a bit in his early days but he got his head down last year and played really well in a promotion-winning side,” said Edinburgh.

“He fits the bill for us. He’ll work hard and he buys in to what we’re trying to achieve here.

“He’ll give us good competition in midfield and we needed him to come in and replace Max Porter who is going to be out for a little while.

“He obviously needs match fitness but he did pre-season with Yeovil so once he gets up to speed he should be a great addition.

“He became available and we enquired about him in pre-season. We thought he would go to a Championship club but we’ve managed to get him here and it could be a real coup for us.”

Edinburgh felt Saturday’s draw at Glanford Park was a fair result after Andrew Hughes scored just after the hour to cancel out Sam Winnall’s opener for the hosts after just 61 seconds.

“I spoke to the players afterwards and said this team was in the Championship a couple of years ago and we were in the Conference South so it shows how far we’ve come,” he said.

And the former Tottenham left-back reserved special praise for 21-year-old Hughes after his first Football League goal.

“Hughesy gets better every game at the moment,” he said. “He had to be patient last year and he will have been disappointed not to have started the season but he was superb, as were the whole back three.”
