NEWPORT County AFC defender Andrew Hughes says the club’s “amazing” fans can help keep their 100 per cent home record going.

Hughes scored his first goal for two and a half years to earn County a point at Scunthorpe United on Saturday and now he’s turning his attention to the visit of Mansfield Town to Rodney Parade.

“Things are definitely looking good,” said the 21-year-old.

“We were unlucky to lose at Northampton but apart from that we are going to tough places like Scunthorpe and getting results.

“We need to get three points at home now and carry on nicking points and the odd win away from home and I think we’ll do well.

“We did the double over Mansfield last season so there’s no reason why we can’t beat them again on Saturday,” he added.

“They will be a threat but if we take the game to them we will be confident of getting another win.

“And our fans will cheer us on. We’ve got amazing fans and they can help us keep the 100 per cent record going at Rodney Parade.”

Hughes was delighted to get his first Football League goal to cancel out Sam Winnall’s 61 second opener at Glanford Park.

“It’s a great achievement for me. I don’t get on the scoresheet very often and to get a goal at Scunthorpe and earn a point is great,” he said.

“The early goal took the steam out of us a little bit but I think we reacted well and after ten or 15 minutes we were on top.

“We had a few chances and fortunately I took one and I could have had another. He caught it on the line so I was gutted but a point was probably a fair result in the end.”

And the Exiles youngster is pleased to have earned a starting place alongside Tom Naylor and Harry Worley at the back.

“I’ve taken my chance and I’ve just got to keep playing well and the team has got to keep playing well and keep getting points on the board,” he said.

“The manager didn’t tell us to change too much at half-time. As a back three we were too far apart but second half we tightened up and they were unable to get the ball to the striker’s feet.

“We were camped in their half a lot more and we had a lot more possession, more corners, and more chances and with the delivery we’ve got we caused them problems.”
