IT promises to be an emotional night when over 400 rugby fans gather at a charity dinner to remember Gareth Edwards' famous try for the Barbarians, writes Chris Kirwan.

The seven Baa Baas players involved in the 1973 score against New Zealand – widely regarded as the greatest of all time – will be on the top table at the event at the Mecure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff on Friday, October 25.

Phil Bennett, JPR Williams, John Pullin, John Dawes, Tom David, Derek Quinnell and Gareth Edwards will toast that score and also remember the great Cliff Morgan, who passed away earlier this month.

The former Wales fly-half's commentary is synonymous with the try.

"Brilliant by Quinnell. This is Gareth Edwards; a dramatic start. What a score!" said Morgan. "If the greatest writer of the written word had written that story, no one would have believed it."

Tickets are still available for the event, which has been organised by the Welsh Charitables RFC and will raise money for St Anne's Hospice, WREX (the Welsh International Former Players Benevolent Fund), Ty Hafan, The Princes Trust Cymru and St David's Hospice Care.

It will be an entertaining evening and David Power, secretary of the Welsh Charitables RFC, said: "It shows the popularity of the characters from the 70s.

"We hope to get over 500 fans there to enjoy the fun. The night will be an autograph hunter's dream as the seven players have never been together at a dinner."

There will be a drinks reception and five-course meal. Seats and tables are still available priced at £50 per head or £500 per table of ten.
