NEWPORT have signed three more players and have been boosted by the news Oliver Griffiths has recovered quicker than expected from a shoulder injury.
Outside half Matt O’Brien, 21, brother of Cross Keys’ Wales Under-18s fly half Angus, and tighthead prop James Greenfield, 28, have arrived from Pontypool while Wales Universities centre/wing Tom James, 23, has also joined.
Another utility back in Llanharan wing/full back Chris Poole, brother of former Newport Gwent Dragons player Mike Poole, is training with the Black and Ambers.
London-born James, whose previous clubs includes the Gold Coast Raiders in Queensland, made his debut as a replacement for Owen Broad in last week’s opening Principality Premiership game of the season away to Aberavon which ended in a 21-7 defeat.
Back rower Griffiths, 18, was injured in the British and Irish Cup play-off set back away at Cross Keys at the end of last month.
He was expected to be out for a while but should be fit for Saturday’s league clash with Llanelli at Rodney Parade.
Greenfield and fellow prop Jamie Jeune were loaned to Pontypool last weekend for their home Swalec Championship clash with Bridgend Athletic.
Jeune, a former Pooler favourite, came on as a replacement for Josh Powell on the tighthead during their 31-24 victory.
• There will be a minute’s silence before Saturday’s match with Llanelli out of respect for two people connected with Newport.
Former club doctor Dr Lindsay Roblings, who was an honorary life member at Newport, has died with Marilyn, the wife of former Black and Ambers benefactor and current Newport Gwent Dragons director Tony Brown, also recently passing away.
• Newport have rearranged their home fixture against Bedwas at Rodney Parade which was due to take place on Tuesday, December 3, moving it ahead to Saturday, December 7 (kick-off 2.30pm).
