CROSS Keys head coach Greg Woods believes his side can topple “beatable” league and cup double champions Pontypridd and end their remarkable winning streak.

Keys welcome Ponty to Pandy Park this weekend on a great roll themselves after winning their last five competitive matches.

But you’d have to go back an astonishing 22 games to January 12 to find Pontypridd’s last defeat.

On that day they came unstuck to Leinster A’s full-time professionals away at Dublin’s Donnybrook Stadium, losing 21-9.

Since then the Sardis Road side have recorded 21 straight wins, crowned Swalec Cup champions along the way by brushing aside Neath 34-13 at the Millennium Stadium before annihilating Llanelli 47-15 in the play-off final to lift the Principality Premiership in style.

Keys got their league campaign off to a winning start last weekend but made heavy weather of beating Swansea 19-13 at St Helen’s despite bossing the game.

Woods is confident they can give Ponty a bloody nose this weekend and thinks his side’s epic 32-19 Swalec Cup final triumph over them last year has given them the self-belief to beat the side who have dominated Welsh club rugby over the last three years.

“A lot of our boys played in the cup final win over them and that victory has given us belief – they are beatable,” he said.

“We’ve also got boys like Adam Powell (number eight), Gerwyn Price (hooker) and Aaron Bramwell (full back) who have played with Neath and beaten them.

“That’s another mental thing for us – they are used to beating Ponty and that rubs off on the other players.”

But Woods has plenty of time for their opponents and Ponty playing legend, current head coach Dale McIntosh who is steering the club during another golden period in their illustrious modern history.

“I’ve got huge respect for Dale and the club’s cultural ethos,” he said.

“It’s a huge game and I think it will set the tone as to where we are going to be.

“The league isn’t going to be decided this weekend but teams have to start beating them because they have built up such an aura.”
