NEWPORT County AFC defender Tom Naylor is desperate to make amends against Exeter City tomorrow after last week’s Morecambe misery.

The 22-year-old centre-back, on loan from Derby County, scored two own goals and conceded the winning penalty to gift the Shrimps a shock 3-2 win at Rodney Parade.

Naylor said sorry to fans on Twitter after the game and he has re-iterated his apology as he looks ahead to tomorrow’s tough trip to fourth-placed Exeter.

“On Twitter you can say what you want and I was a bit disappointed with my performance,” he said.

“I let the lads down and the fans down and I just wanted to get it out there how sorry I was.

“Hopefully it won’t happen again and they need to stick with me and I’ll perform.

“I’m OK, it’s gone now,” he added. “I’ve had a few good training sessions this week to try to get it out of my system and crack on for Saturday.”

Naylor believes that he has the mentality to put the events of last Saturday behind him and he’s hopeful of getting a chance to make things right this weekend.

“It’s all about your personality. People either crumble or they bounce back,” he said.

“I’m the type of person who doesn’t crumble and if I get the chance on Saturday I will take it.

“The manager just said I had to forget about it and move on and let my ability show in the games.

“I got a bit of stick from the lads on Monday but they are different class here and I just take it with a pinch of salt and give it back.

“I feel sharp and everyone has one of those games where everything goes wrong.”

He added: “To be fair I thought I was playing well before it all happened but that’s football.

“In the first half I had a chance when I tried to curl it into the top corner and I had a few headers so it could have been different.”

And Naylor believes that County, without a win in four League Two games, can record their first away victory at St. James’ Park.

“Exeter are a good side, they’re always around the play-offs but we’ve got the players to go there and cause an upset,” he said.

“They like to keep the ball but I think we can match them. We’ve got brilliant footballers in our team who aren’t afraid to get the ball down and play and I think we can go very confident in our ability to get three points.”
