NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh says his players have got over a psychological barrier by claiming their first away win in League Two.

Goals in either half from Conor Washington and Harry Worley sealed a 2-0 victory at Exeter City on Saturday.

It was County’s first win in the league since August 17 and Edinburgh believes it was a vital three points after last week’s home defeat to Morecambe.

“Psychologically it was very important for us to get the victory so that we could prove to ourselves that we are capable of winning on the road,” said the Exiles boss.

“We’ve got a lot of players missing at the moment and we’re only going to get better but that gives us a massive boost because it had been a little while.

“There was quite a lot of negativity about last week and I probably let that creep in to me a little bit as well.

“I’ve learned from that and I think we’ve really underestimated what we have achieved without six or seven first team players.

“The young boys have come in and done well and I’m delighted for them but I think the inexperience caught up with us last weekend and Ismail Yakubu, Harry Worley and Tony James when he came on were immense for us,” he added.

“We’ve got a clean sheet and our first away win and I’m delighted for the players. I thought they worked tremendously hard.”

But the key man was 21-year-old Washington who scored one and made the other and Edinburgh says the striker has a very bright future.

“The boy has got a bright future,” he said. “He really played well and caused Exeter all sorts of problems.

“And he’s only going to get better. This time last year he was playing part-time football in step eight and he was a postman.

“He’s come up to this level and I think he can go beyond. It was a fantastic performance from him, as it was by everyone, but he was our standout player today.

“I think he can be a real star. He gets better every day in training and he’s a level headed kid but I think he’s destined for a big future.”
