DEFENDER Harry Worley is targeting more goals this season after his second of the campaign sealed three points for Newport County AFC on Saturday.

The former Chelsea youngster smashed Conor Washington’s cross into the roof of the net with 20 minutes remaining to kill off Exeter City at St. James’ Park.

Worley, who also netted in the opening day win over Accrington Stanley, is now level with striker Danny Crow in the scoring charts.

He’s one behind Washington, who opened the scoring on Saturday, and two off top scorer Chris Zebroski and assistant manager Jimmy Dack has set the centre-back an ambitious target for the season.

“The boys keep saying I’m the first out there for the shooting drill on Fridays in training so obviously the practice is paying off,” said the 24-year-old.

“Dacky was joking that I’m going to get ten goals now. There’s not a chance of that but I’ll hopefully get a few more and I want to get a couple with my head to be honest.”

On Saturday’s goal he said: “If you have a good first touch there you are obviously going to score because it was pretty much an open goal.”

Worley was more pleased about the clean sheet at the other end of the pitch, particularly after the home defeat to Morecambe seven days earlier.

“Last week was disappointing, especially the manner of the defeat, but what better way to bounce back than to go to a tough place like Exeter and get the win and a clean sheet? We’re all very happy,” he said.

The return of Ismail Yakubu and Tony James’ appearance from the bench added experience to the Exiles’ back line but Worley praised youngsters Andrew Hughes and Tom Naylor, who was dropped after netting two own goals against Morecambe.

“It’s good to have them back but I think Nayls and Hughesy have done really well,” he said.

“Hughesy has been really consistent and so has Nayls until last week, which was a little hiccup. He’ll come back from that.

“Obviously there is Jamo, Ish and Byron Anthony to come back as well so we’ve got some strong defenders here.

“When everyone is fit there will be great competition for places and that is what we all want.”

And Worley was delighted to have sent the 861 County fans happy, particularly after they cheered the unfortunate Naylor onto the pitch when he made a late cameo in midfield.

“There is no point slating someone if they make a mistake so that is the least I expect but the fans were brilliant all afternoon,” he said.

“They stayed on afterwards and we all gave them a clap. That was nice because their support was great, as it always is.”
