WALES’ most capped hooker Garin Jenkins is no longer working with Newport side Rogerstone after it was announced he would be their head coach for the season.

The 46-year-old ex-Pontypool and Swansea enforcer took several training session with the Swalec Division Five East side over the summer before the two parted company.

But Jenkins, who represented his country 58 times – a record for a hooker that he shares with current player Matthew Rees – and played in three World Cups, hasn’t ruled out helping them again in the future.

The reason the front row forward, who scored a try during Swansea’s famous 21-6 victory over World Cup holders Australia in 1992, decided not to continue on a long-term basis was, he says, because there weren’t enough players coming to training.

“I didn’t sign a contract and I took four or five sessions, but there were only 11 players training – although I do think that’s the norm with many clubs these days,” he said.

“Rogerstone have got some good coaches and some good players and I thought it was just pointless for me to carry on.

“I thought they would be well served, may be better served, by carrying on with the coaches they already have.”

Jenkins, who won the Five Nations championship with Wales in 1994, added: “Rogerstone are a good club who are doing a lot of good work.

“The door certainly isn’t shut and I would be happy to go back if they needed specialist help ahead of a big game.”

Ynysybwl’s Jenkins has done some rugby consultancy and occasionally works as a broadcaster.

Rogerstone have had an encouraging start to their league campaign, winning the season’s opening day fixture 24-13 at Old Penarthians.

They then lost 35-20 at home to Machen but got back to winning ways with a 22-20 success away at Bettws last weekend.
