ANDY Powell doesn't feature as Wigan bid for Super League glory this evening but he has been backed to shine in 2014, writes Chris Kirwan.
The Cherry and Whites, who are chasing the double after Challenge Cup glory, take on Leeds in the semi-finals at the DW Stadium this evening.
Powell, a back row forward for Wales and the Lions in union, has been left out of the squad but that is no slight on his talent.
The 32-year-old is in the early stages of his Wigan career since switching codes, scoring one try in his five appearances.
"I'm really pleased with him at the minute but I firmly believe we will get the best out of him next year when he has had a pre-season with us," said Wigan coach Shaun Wane.
"He runs the ball strongly, he's brave, he's tough and he's athletic, too. He is a big guy but he's quick."
"Andy is keen and wants to get better. That'll do for me and I'll work with him."
Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin has been impressed by the *-times capped former Newport forward.
"He's a great character and is great to have around the place," he said.
"He's done a lot of hard work with the lads but also on his own to try and get up to speed with everything.
"I think he would be the first to say that he has still got a lot to learn but what he has been for us is a big, physical body who has come in and done a good job for us."
Abertridwr's Ben Flower and Abergavenny's Gil Dudson, who both played for Newport Gwent Dragons at age-grade level, feature for Wigan this evening.
