MIDFIELDER Adam Chapman knows Newport County AFC need a good performance and a win today to keep the crowds coming to Rodney Parade.
County, who host Torquay United this afternoon, got their first away win of the League Two campaign at Exeter City last week but their last two home matches have left their fans disappointed.
The Exiles were held to a dour 1-1 draw by Chapman’s former club Mansfield Town three weeks ago before going down to a shock home defeat to Morecambe a week later.
And Chapman knows that the players need to build on last week’s away win by taking all three points against the Gulls.
“The crowds have been brilliant this year but the only way to keep them coming is to get good results,” said the 23-year-old.
“I think we’ll look back at the Mansfield game and see that they will go and do that at a lot of places. The way they set up will disrupt a lot of teams but we still got a point.
“The Morecambe one was obviously disappointing but we still felt like we did OK in that game.
“A lot of teams rely on their home form, especially the new teams, and obviously we started off well at Rodney Parade,” he added.
“We’re looking to get the majority of our points at home as we feel it is a hard place to come.
“It’s hard for people to come and get anything here and we want to keep that going.”
And Chapman says the impressive victory at Exeter has given the players a big lift ahead of today’s match.
“We weren’t happy after the Morecambe game but the mood has been pretty positive throughout and the win at Exeter was obviously a boost for us,” said the Northern Ireland under-21 international.
“It was our first away win in the league this season, which is nice to get off our back as well.
“Torquay will be tough. We know what this league is about now. I feel everyone is of a similar standard apart from maybe four or five teams at either end.
“There’s a massive chunk of teams in the middle of a similar standard and we’ll go into this game looking to get three points, like we do in every single home game.”
Torquay have added 19-year-old striker Adebayo Azeez to the squad after agreeing to sign him from Charlton Athletic on a one-month youth loan.
Azeez is an England under-19 international said to be blessed with outstanding pace and is expected to go straight into the United squad for today’s match.
