GOALKEEPER Lenny Pidgeley is a doubt for Newport County AFC ahead of their trip to Bury tomorrow.

The Exiles number one has been playing with a finger injury for the last two weeks but he aggravated it in training yesterday and had feared that there may be a broken bone.

An X-ray showed no break but there is a ruptured joint and if manager Justin Edinburgh opts not to risk Pidgeley then 20-year-old stopper Jamie Stephens would step into the breach.

Stephens started in goal in the first three matches of the season while Pidgeley dealt with personal problems.

But he has not featured in a competitive match since the defeat at Northampton Town on August 10 and his last appearance in a County shirt was one he will want to forget.

Stephens had to pick the ball out of the net 13 times as he played alongside Lee Minshull, Tom Naylor, Ryan Jackson and County Academy prospects in a crushing friendly defeat to a string Cardiff City side on Tuesday.

But Edinburgh is confident that he will be able to field an unchanged side from last week’s 2-1 win over Torquay United, if he chooses to.

“We’ve got no fresh injuries and Minshull is now available [after suspension] so that’s a positive,” he said.

Edinburgh did also reveal that Christian Jolley and Ryan Burge are unlikely to be fit to play at Gigg Lane and that Aaron O’Connor and Max Porter will be back in around six weeks.

“It has probably come just a little bit too soon for Christian but he’s doing really well,” said the Exiles boss.

“Ryan Burge is having a scan on his injury and hopefully he won’t be too far off but, unfortunately Aaron and Max are going to be longer.

“They’ve been reassessed by [new physio] Adam Roche and they’ll be doing intensive rehabilitation work.

“They’re in competent hands but we’re probably looking at six weeks before they’re fit to return.

“It is a setback for Aaron and we’re disappointed but on the plus side it is good news for Max because we were looking at longer than that,” he added.

“They are both going to be like new signings when they come back.”

The trip to Bury is the first of three away games in eight days with Crawley Town away in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday and Rochdale away in League Two next Saturday.

“Obviously I’ve got decisions to make, which is always pleasing,” said Edinburgh.

“The boys who came in last week did really well but we’ve got one or two that we may look to change being away from home. We’ll make that decision on Saturday.

“We have to try and manage it sensibly because there will be a lot asked of the players this week. We’ll have to be sensible and look to rotate.”
