WALES great Mark Ring says he would “love” to be Cardiff Blues’ new attack coach once ex-Newport Gwent Dragons scrum half Gareth Baber leaves the post.

The job will be vacant at the end of the year after Baber takes up a new head coach position overseas, believed to be in Hong Kong.

A former Cross Keys coach and Pontypool player, the gifted Ring, who won 32 caps for Wales, is currently Cardiff attack coach but also works with the Blues on a part-time basis.

Blues director of rugby Phil Davies has gone on record to say he is looking for an experienced attack coach to replace Baber.

Shaun Edwards, the Wales defence coach, has been linked with a role at Cardiff Arms Park, but although Davies, who did not rule out the possibility of the ex-rugby league star being used by the Blues in the future, was adamant they are looking for an attack coach.

"Shaun has a full-time job and we have a defence coach in Rob Powell," he said.

Former Cross Keys backs coach Ring, who helped the Pandy Park side plot their 2012 Swalec Cup triumph, a year in which they also reached the British and Irish Cup final, revealed he is interested in the role.

“I would love to have that opportunity with the Blues, of course I would,” said the centre and outside half who played for Wales in the 1987 and 1991 World Cup.

“I work with the Blues one or two days a week on specifics – whatever Phil Davies and Gareth Baber want me to do.

“It’s usually on things like space-creation and decision-making in tight areas.”

However Ring, an instrumental player in Pontypool’s 1988 Welsh championship-winning side after joining from Cardiff, doesn’t believe he will replace Baber.

“I only know what I’ve read from snippets in the press and I’m afraid I don’t think it will happen,” he said.
