WALES coach Rob Howley has revealed how ‘disappointed’ he was with giant wing George North’s performance against South Africa and called on him to up his game for Argentina.

The 21-year-old was well below the best which saw him score two tries in the British and Irish Lions’ 2-1 Test series victory over Australia this summer.

During Saturday’s 24-15 defeat to the Boks in Cardiff, the 6ft 4in and 17st flyer allowed opposite number Bryan Habana to get away and set up captain and centre Jean de Villiers’ early try, kicked badly and wasn’t a potent offensive force.

Attack coach Howley ruled out switching North to the centre for this weekend’s clash with the Pumas, as well as dismissing any suggestion of moving full-back Leigh Halfpenny to the wing as Wales face the autumn without injured Lions centres Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies and winger Alex Cuthbert.

On being asked about using 2012 Grand Slam winner North as a midfield option, he said: “Not at this moment in time. George needs to get back to where he was last year and on the summer tour.

“I was a bit disappointed with his performance in terms of number of touches.”

Former Wales and Lions scrum-half Howley added: “We talk about getting involved in the game and I just felt he fell short. We have spoken about it, both of us, and it’s important he plays on the wing at the weekend and gets involved in terms of his work-rate.

“When he won his first cap against South Africa, he made 20 odd touches (scoring two tries in a Wales’ 29-25 defeat in 2010 at the age of 18). He only made seven on the weekend.”

On the possibility of shifting Halfpenny to his old position of wing, Holwey replied: “We believe Leigh is one of the best full-backs in world rugby and we would like to keep him at 15.

"He is a top quality 15 and we don't want to move him to the wing, where he hasn't played for a long time.”

Meanwhile tighthead prop Adam Jones, 32, has been ruled out of the remainder of Wales' autumn international series.

The Ospreys’ 2009 and 2013 Lions star injured his calf during the defeat to the Boks – his 89th cap for his country – and will miss the Tests with Argentina, Tonga and Australia.
