BLACKWOOD’S Bradley Dredge could be set to recapture his European Tour card, but the dream is dead for a pair of Gwent golfers.
The 40-year old Dredge, who is a two-time European Tour winner, enjoyed his best day yesterday at the Tour School Final Qualifying at PGA Catalunya Resort.
The fourth round of the gruelling six-day schedule is an imperative one, because the field is cut in half with those who fail to make the mark forced to give up their European Tour dream for at least 12 months.
However, a splendid four-under par round from Dredge has taken him to seven under par, putting him within touching distance of the top 25, all of whom will be rewarded with full playing privileges for next year.
Dredge has spent 14 of the past 15 seasons as a full Tour member and his three birdies in his final four holes yesterday have put him in the frame to return.
The former World Cup winner isn’t Wales’ top performer this week, however, with Stuart Manley racing towards his card.
Manley is at nine under, having shot 69 and is inside the all-important top 25.
However, Newport’s Philip Price and Chepstow’s Liam Bond won’t be on the European Tour in 2014.
Former Ryder Cup star Price, three times a winner in Europe, shot a one-over par 72 yesterday to leave himself stranded at three over for the week, five strokes off the cut.
Following Price out of Spain is Bond, who failed to capitalise on the best year of his career and will also exit.
Bond, a cult figure status at final qualifying school having made 15 unsuccessful attempts to earn a potentially priceless card before finally achieving his goal in 2010 only to hand it straight back, had headed to Spain in confident mood.
The Southport-born 43-year-old has had a renaissance this summer, winning the West Region PGA and leading the Celtic Manor Wales Open after 36 holes.
Out-of-form former top 50 in the world player Rhys Davies from Bridgend has also missed the cut and won’t be back on the European Tour next year.
