NEWPORT County AFC will learn their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern section semi-final opponents on Saturday morning and striker Conor Washington knows who he wants to face.
The Exiles beat Portsmouth 3-0 at Rodney Parade on Saturday thanks to two goals from Washington and the 21-year-old from Chatham is desperate for a trip to Peterborough in the last four rather than Stevenage or Swindon Town.
“I want Peterborough away because it’s only about 15 minutes from my family,” he said.
“It would be good to get them down to the game to see me play.”
Justin Edinburgh’s men are now just three games away from a potential return to Wembley for a third season running but Washington insists they are taking nothing for granted.
“We’re not thinking about Wembley yet,” he said. “We’ve obviously been pretty lucky with the number of times we’ve been there in recent years and it would be great to get there again but we’re just taking every game as it comes.”
And next up is the visit of Hartlepool United to Rodney Parade in League Two tomorrow night.
Washington is looking forward to another game so soon after Tuesday’s win and is targeting three points, which would take his side into the play-off places.
“I like to play as many games as possible in a week,” he said. “It gives you a chance to put right your mistakes or, as we did, carry on the momentum.
“Three points on Friday night would be big because it would take us up the table before anyone else plays.”
And Washington is confident of success with only one home defeat so far this season.
“We press so high and don’t give teams any time and we go out onto the pitch every single home game thinking we are going to win,” he said.
“That intensity probably shocks a few teams. We had a really quick start against Portsmouth and the last thing you want as a defender is a lot of pressure on the ball in the opening few minutes.
“I’m quite pleased to get two goals,” he added. “It probably should have been three but it’s great to get the win and get through to the next round.
“I’ve missed a couple in the last few games and it was nice to get the second one to erase the memory of the miss.”
