WALES have reunited the back row that beat England in the Six Nations for Saturday’s Test with Argentina after blindside flanker Dan Lydiate suffered an ankle injury.
The former Newport Gwent Dragons man suffered the blow in last weekend’s 24-15 loss to South Africa at the Millennium Stadium.
Lydiate’s absence sees captain Sam Warburton switch to the blindside with in-form Ospreys flanker Justin Tipuric moving up from the bench to slot in at openside with Dragons number eight Toby Faletau in between them. Former captain Ryan Jones is their back-up.
Cardiff Blues prop Gethin Jenkins will win his 100th cap for Wales while his regional teammate Cory Allen will make his international bow in midfield.
Jenkins will become only the fourth Welsh player to reach the milestone (Stephen Jones 104, Martyn Williams 100, Gareth Thomas 100) and is joined in the front row by Scarlets tighthead Rhodri Jones, who is in for the injured Adam Jones.
Allen, 20, replaces the sidelined Jonathan Davies in midfield while Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar gets the nod ahead of Rhys Priestland, who had a faltering display against the Boks.
Scarlets wing Liam Williams has recovered from a blow to the head to take his place on the wing.
“Last weekend will stand us in good stead in terms of physicality and intensity as Saturday will be a huge battle against Argentina,” said Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland.
“They will be looking for a repeat of last year (when they won 26-12) and we will need to be more clinical to get the result we are aiming for.
“We have been working hard to ensure we convert the chances we create and encourage the players to look for and exploit opportunities and space.”
