GWENT boxer Robbie Turley is set to return to the ring next month for the first time since March 2012 after the British Boxing Board of Control cleared him to fight, writes Andrew Penman.
The Cefn Fforest super-bantamweight, who turns 27 next week, has been forced to step away from boxing for the past 20 months due to concerns about a brain scan.
But after a long battle with the BBBofC Turley has won the right to fight on.
He is back in training with Tony Borg at the St Joseph’s gym in Newport and set to fight at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on Friday, December 13.
Dad Chris Turley, who has led the campaign for his son to be able to continue boxing, is delighted that the BBBofC have finally given him the green light.
He said: “After a long, hard and exhausting battle I can now confirm that Robbie Turley will be making his return to the boxing ring in the very near future.
“Sincere thanks to the president and stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control.
He added: “Many thanks to all of you guys that gave your support and well wishes during the last year and a half.”
Meanwhile, Turley’s St Joes stablemate Frankie Borg is in action in Kent tonight when he takes on Chris Eubank Jnr.
The 33-year-old Welsh middleweight champion has stepped in to face Eubank at short notice and will also be on the bill in Cardiff next month.
Tonight’s bout, over six three-minute rounds takes place on the James DeGale undercard at Glow in Bluewater, Kent, and is live on Channel Five from 10pm.
Brighton-based Eubank, son of former world champion Chris Eubank, will be looking to impress on national TV and add a 12th consecutive win to his perfect record as a pro.
Borg has just one defeat on his CV after nine fights as a pro.
