WALES star Leigh Halfpenny is delighted his side played with more than a little style in their 40-6 defeat of Argentina as they ran the poor Pumas ragged on the weekend.

The hosts were far more clinical against the Latin Americans on Saturday than they were against the South Africa a week before.

Wales scored four tries, three of them crackers, against Rugby Championship strugglers Argentina while they weren’t able to cross the Boks’ line once in a disappointing 24-15 setback.

Full-back Halfpenny kicked 20 points on the weekend to increase his points tally for his country to 314 points on his 46th cap.

The deadly place kicker missed just one shot at goal, slotting over four penalties and all the conversions, the 24-year-old having a hand in Newport Gwent Dragons number eight Toby Faletau’s sparkling second half try.

Speaking after Wales’ record win over Argentina, perfectionist Halfpenny said of the one penalty that got away: “I was disappointed to miss that one. It’s always nice to get 100% – and it was right in front. Overall it was good.”

The Six Nations player of the year and British and Irish Lions hero in their 2-1 series victory in Australia, after which he was named the tourists’ man of the series, was satisfied with Wales’ adventurous play against the Pumas.

“We played to the standard we set and, if you look at the game, there were probably a couple more opportunities we should have taken, but we are very pleased with the performance and result,” Halfpenny said.

“We lost to them last year so it was pleasing beat them this time. We all enjoy playing open running rugby and we had a chance to do that. We played with a bit of flair and excitement and really enjoyed it.

“I’m just trying to work as hard as I can and do everything possible to be prepared for the game.”

Halfpenny scored 49 points out of the Lions’ 79 as they beat the Wallabies 23-21 and 41-16, losing the second Test 16-15, during an absorbing recent series.

And the No 15 insists Wales aren’t looking ahead further than Friday night’s clash with Tonga in Cardiff, Australia looming at the end of the month with a chance of ending an eight-match losing streak against something of a bogey team.

“It was an amazing summer and I am just enjoying my rugby with a fantastic team,” he said.

“But we are taking each game at a time as we focus on Tonga, they will bring physicality. We have to keep achieving the standards we are setting and repeat that.”
