FA Cup match winner Robbie Willmott says success on the road is overdue for Newport County AFC ahead of Saturday’s short trip to Cheltenham Town.
The left wing-back scored a spectacular free-kick winner to see of Braintree Town in the cup on Tuesday night and seal a third home win in eight days for County.
The Exiles are riding high in League Two, just three points off the top of the table, and progressing in the cups but there is a marked difference between their superb home form and an away record that is average at best.
Justin Edinburgh’s men have often performed well away from home and felt they haven’t been rewarded for those displays.
The stats show that they have won eight out of ten home games, with one draw against Mansfield Town and the freak 3-2 loss to Morecambe when Tom Naylor scored two own goals and conceded the winning penalty.
Away from Rodney Parade in 12 games they have earned five draws and suffered four defeats with just three wins – the shock victory at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Capital One Cup, the 3-2 win at Crawley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and a solitary League Two success at Exeter City.
“We want to show people what we’re made of away from home and we’re focused now on Cheltenham,” said Willmott.
“It’s been difficult on the road. We’ve had hard places to go like Rochdale and Fleetwood but we’re on a roll now and we’ve just got to keep that up.
“We’re looking solid defensively and we’re keeping clean sheets.
“As long as we keep doing that we’re in with a chance of winning because the three lads up front are creating plenty of chances and one of them will put one away.”
Willmott was delighted that his time studying the free-kick techniques of the likes of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo online paid off against Braintree.
“I was pleased with it. I practice that quite a lot in training,” he said.
“The lads will tell you I watch YouTube clips to study that technique to strike the ball and luckily for me it paid off in spectacular style.
“Braintree made it hard for us,” he added. “They spoiled it like they do and they’re a horrible team to play against.
“They played well but we know we’re good at home. We’ve made it a fortress and teams come here and they can’t live with us.”
The win booked County a trip to Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Cup second round on December 7.
“It’ll be a tough game because it has been every time we’ve played Kidderminster,” said Willmott. “But we’re creating history every game that we play and it would be nice to get to the third round and get a game against one of the big teams.”
