PLAYING for Wales at the Millennium Stadium was a dream come true for Owen Williams who added to the magical experience with a superb individual try.
The 22-year-old centre was capped twice during his country’s tour of Japan in the summer before playing in his third Test for the 17-7 victory over Tonga on Friday night.
He partnered his old Neath Port Talbot College and Wales Under-20s midfield teammate Ashley Beck in that win, both scoring sparkling tries that paved the way for a back-to-back autumn triumph.
Williams’ try came after full-back Leigh Halfpenny burst into the line, before putting him away with a well-timed pass although the Merthyr Tydfil-born man and plenty to do before finishing excellently.
“It was my first try for Wales, it was a great moment, a proud moment for me and my family, and obviously I was a little bit nervous when the referee went up to the TMO, but I was happy afterwards,” he said.
“Leigh did really well, he drew the guy in and managed to get the pass away.
“It has always been a dream of mine to play for Wales at the Millennium Stadium and I was just really excited and I didn't want to get too nervous about it, and try and enjoy it, and it was great to get the win.”
Does Williams think he has done enough to merit a place for the clash with Australia on Saturday?
“We will have to wait and see,” he replied. “It was good to get a run out, I have been injured for a few weeks and to have a run out on Friday and being involved in the Wales set up and getting to know the boys, but I will see what happens in the week.”
And how did he think he and Beck combined against Tonga?
“It went alright, I've played with Ashley in the Wales Under-20s in the World Cup and I've known him for a few years now,” he said.
“He's got a bit more experience in these type of things and he has helped me out in the week, and we went all right on the night and I felt confident playing with him.
“He helped me out in the week and got me up to speed with the calls and stuff and we’ll just go from there.”
