IN-FORM Jason Tovey is playing himself into contention for Wales according to his half-back partner at Newport Gwent Dragons.

The 24-year-old fly-half has enjoyed a super start to the season after heading home to Rodney Parade following an ill-fated season at Cardiff Blues.

Tovey is second on the RaboDirect Pro12 points list with a 86 per cent success rate from the kicking tee and was a key figure in the Dragons' shock 23-8 win in Glasgow last weekend.

The left-footer bagged a full house – a try, two conversions, a pair of penalties and a drop goal – and also set up wing Will Harries with a well-executed cross-kick.

When Tovey first broke through for the Dragons it seemed a matter of when, not if, he would play for Wales but he remains uncapped.

In 2009 he was unable to tour North America because of his region's European commitments and had to head home from a Polish training camp because of a back problem after being named in the preliminary squad for the 2011 World Cup.

Tovey is behind Dan Biggar, Rhys Priestland, James Hook and Rhys Patchell in the international pecking order.

But Dragons scrum-half Richie Rees believes his performances will force coaches Warren Gatland and Rob Howley to consider calling him into the Wales fold.

"Jason is playing particularly well and was fantastic on Friday night, he put us in the right areas and kept the scoreboard moving," said Rees, who is in impressive form himself.

"The way he is going I don't see why he can't be in the Welsh camp, he is a talented guy with all the attributes and I feel that he has got to be given a chance.

"Jason has been consistently good this season and deserves an opportunity at international level, then it would be up to him to take it."

The Dragons' 8-9-10 axis of Netani Talei-Rees-Tovey was pivotal to the success in Scotland and will be to the fore again on Friday when table-toppers Munster head to Rodney Parade.

"Netani was also superb in Glasgow and gave us great go-forward," said Rees. "When you have players like him and Jason on form then it gives us a chance to keep building and picking up points."
