THE UK’s top paracyclists will be in action at the Wales National Velodrome, Newport, this week - 14 months on from the London Paralympic Games.

The International Paracycling Cup tournament runs from Friday to Sunday and tickets are now on sale.

Riding on the track in Newport will be Olympic medallists Dame Sarah Storey, Jodie Cundy, Darren Kenny, Rik Waddon, Neil Fachie and Jon-Allan Butterworth.

Newport City Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, Councillor Debbie Wilcox, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming some of the world’s top paracyclists to Newport and I know that the British athletes will get a warm Newport welcome.

“Newport’s velodrome is a fantastic sporting venue that has first-class facilities and we are delighted to be hosting the competition in the city.”

The evening sessions (Friday, 7pm-10pm, Saturday, 7pm-10pm and Sunday , 3pm-7pm) are ticketed and tickets have to be booked in advance. Prices are £5 for adults and £2.50 for juniors.

Storey is a multiple gold medal winner at the Paralympics in both swimming and cycling and is considered to be one of the best Paralympic athletes. Her total of 11 gold medals makes her equal with Tanni Grey-Thomson and Dave Roberts.

At London 2012 she won Britain’s first gold medal and went on to win a further three golds.

Cundy started his cycling career in Newport after a ride on the boards of the Newport Velodrome. His potential was spotted by one of the coaches on an open day and he has also trained with the Newport Velo squad.

He represented GB at both the Beijing Olympics and in London 2012 where he won a gold and bronze medals respectively.

Kenny is a British road and track racing cyclist and has a total of 10 Paralympic medals, making him one of the sport’s biggest stars.

To watch these paracyclists in action at the Wales National Velodrome, Newport, existing leisure card holders can book their tickets online, new customers can book their tickets by contacting the council’s reception teams on 01633 656757.

There will also be a number of free sessions and these will be on Saturday from 10am to 6.30pm and Sunday from 10am to 3pm and tickets do not have to be booked in advance for these.
