NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh believes his players need to have more belief in their own abilities to succeed on the road.

The Exiles earned a creditable 0-0 draw at League Two leaders Oxford United on Tuesday night but have still won only one league game away from home all season.

Edinburgh’s men are in blistering form at home with six wins from eight games but have struggled to match that away from Rodney Parade.

And the Exiles boss says the difference between his side at home and away comes down to a lack of belief on their travels.

“We looked solid and restricted Oxford to very few chances and to come to the league leaders and not look like conceding I’m delighted with that,” said Edinburgh.

“But I think we could be more positive and have a bit more belief away from home.

“We don’t have any fear but we sometimes allow ourselves to be pushed back and start slowly rather than going and imposing ourselves.

“I certainly feel that we shouldn’t fear anyone and we should be looking at being in that top seven come the end of the season.”

Conor Washington hit the post in the 0-0 draw at Cheltenham last Saturday and Christian Jolley clipped the bar at Oxford and Edinburgh says that shows his team is not far away from finding a winning formula away from home.

“It is still only one win away from home but that is our sixth draw and I don’t think we’ve been hanging on in any of those draws,” he said.

“I’ve always said it’s disappointing but I’m not going to criticize the performances because some of them have been good enough to win games.

“In the last two games we’ve hit the post and the crossbar so if they go in we’re talking about four more points and two wins away from home so I think we’ve got to remain very positive about our performances.

“But I do feel there is more to come from us and that pleases me and excites me,” he added.

“We didn’t have that cutting edge (at Oxford) that we have done a lot of times this season.

“We were a little bit apprehensive and indecisive to start and I think it took us a little while to get that out of our system.

“They pinned Robbie Willmott and Ryan Jackson back and we found it hard to get any width and get in behind them.

“But when you don’t concede away from home and you take a point home with you it’s not a bad result.”
