NEWPORT County have extended the successful loan spell of Cardiff City defender Deji Oshilaja, writes Michael Pearlman.

The 20-year old Bluebirds defender has really caught the eye since making the move to Rodney Parade, prompting manager Justin Edinburgh to enquire about his staying longer term.

It is understood the Exiles may even be keen to try and arrange a deal for the remainder of the campaign, but that wouldn’t be possible to arrange until the January transfer window.

Oshilaja signed at the end of October and has been heavily involved since with Newport’s defence keeping five clean sheets in succession.

“Deji has done really well since he’s come here, he’s fitted in well with the squad and we are pleased he’s keen to keep playing here,” manager Justin Edinburgh explained.

Meanwhile, Richie Barker took a step closer to becoming Portsmouth boss yesterday after leaving Crawley Town.

Barker, is the odds-on favourite to succeed Guy Whittingham for a post Edinburgh was linked with, having played for Pompey in 2002.

However, having stated he doesn’t want the post, Edinburgh’s odds have drifted.
