OUR Father’s demolition job of 14 rivals at Chepstow set pulses racing and he can finally deliver what he promised in today’s Hennessy Gold Cup.
The dashing grey, previously one of my horses to follow, impressed many an observer on that day two years ago, but it has not all been plain sailing.
He has an unblemished record first time out, however subsequent performances have been less inspiring.
I’m a big fan of jockey Timmy Murphy’s hold-up style and supporters can expect to see him easing his mount into contention on the final circuit.
In my eyes there is no doubt he has the ability to win a race like this and Murphy believes the horse will be suited by better ground.
Trainer David Pipe’s team have been in good form on these Saturdays of late, especially with greys and it would be a tonic for the family of the late David Johnson who owned this horse, if he were to win.
Welsh trained At Fishers Cross makes his reappearance at Newbury 2.25, which has attracted a decent enough field.
He should prove up to the task if he is to justify his 4-1 price tag for the World Hurdle.
Saphir Du Rheu takes the eye in the 1.55, with Harry Derham taking off a handy 5lb off the horse’s back.
He shaped nicely on heavy at Sandown and like many of Nicholls’, probably needed the run to put him straight for this.
To end on a high, I can’t express how thrilled I was to see Cue Card triumph for this column last week at 9-1.
It was a tremendous performance by a horse overlooked by most; it was effortless and he was going away again at the finish.
Those in behind should improve for a run but such was Cue Card’s domination they have him all to beat.
SELECTIONS: Newbury 1.50 Saphir Du Rheu, 2.25 At Fishers Cross, 3.00 Our Father
