PORTSMOUTH have made an official approach for Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh, but have been rebuffed.
Director of Football Tim Harris received the approach late on Monday afternoon from the League Two strugglers, who Edinburgh represented as a player.
However, after talking with Edinburgh, the board decided to reject the bid and hope the matter is now settled.
In a statement on their website they explained: "Tim Harris Director of Football , this morning (the Argus understands it was in the afternoon) received a phone call from a representative of Portsmouth FC seeking permission to speak to Justin Edinburgh about their vacant Managerial post.
"After discussion with Justin, The Board of Directors have informed Portsmouth they will not give permission to discuss their vacant Managerial position."
Edinburgh last week denied having interest in the post. He is the current fifth favourite with the bookies at 16-1 to join the South Coast club.
