SO as we head into another festive fixture there is little doubt who County’s biggest star and key contributor is at the moment, it’s me isn’t it?
I could be modest, tell you it is a team game and that everyone is playing their part, but I’m not having that, our success at the moment is down to yours truly!
Of course I don’t mean that, but having gone so long without a goal, it’s really nice to have had such a great little run of scoring three goals in two games.
The journalists after the game on Boxing Day told me that I haven’t scored since 2011, 25 months ago, but they obviously forgot my solitary strike last season, against Cambridge United in the Conference.
However, it’s most definitely my first goals in the Football League since my Bradford days and it’s a nice feeling, but not totally surprising to me at least.
Scoring goals has historically always been a big part of my game, it’s what got me noticed enough at Barry Town to earn a move to Wigan and then from Gillingham to Blackpool, scoring goals from midfield, it’s what I love doing.
The role I’ve played for Newport has been different, I’ve largely been asked to anchor the midfield and offer protection and let our attacking players express themselves and that’s not a problem for me, I’ll do anything for Newport County.
But the way we’ve played in the last couple of games, lining up 4-3-3, it’s allowed me a different license to get forward and I’ve enjoyed it.
People have said very nice things about the quality of the goal that won us the game at Wycombe and I have to really give the credit to Adam Chapman.
He played a superb pass, not even his first in the game and it was perfect for me, especially when the goalkeeper shouted it was his ball and I knew he was going to come rushing out so I could just cushion it over him.
Chappers is a very clever footballer, it’s a real pleasure to play alongside him.
It’s a nice feeling to score, but it’s a much nicer feeling to score meaningful goals that win games and it was a superb team effort on Boxing Day.
I thought our tempo and the way we kept possession in the first half set a very, very high standard and we also dug in when we had to and did the dirty side of the game well and kept things nice and tight.
We weren’t so good with the ball in the second half but the work ethic and commitment saw us through when lesser sides would’ve conceded, because Wycombe played quite well.
We are full of confidence at the moment. We aren’t arrogant, but we are full of belief and will go to Burton and give it our all and hopefully get another positive result.
People will say that we’ve ended our hoodoo away now by winning back-to-back games after only winning once in the league away before that, but I honestly don’t see it that way.
I didn’t notice a problem with the performances, the lads have been performing well, week in week out and that’s why I’ve been on the bench waiting for my chance.
We’ve maybe been unlucky on the road but now we are getting the rewards.
I think that possibly it was a bit of a blessing the Wimbledon game was off, because this is a punishing time of year on your legs.
I can only speak for myself, but at the tempo we play at, it’s difficult.
There are older legs than mine in League Two, but probably not many playing in teams that play the kind of high tempo stuff that we do.
I don’t know if I will be able to play all the games over Christmas, but the thing is with our gaffer, you NEVER know who he’s going to pick, he always keeps you on your toes.
Myself and Adam Chapman are playing well, but we’ve got Lee Minshull, Tom Naylor and Ryan Burge all desperate to get a game and the competition is fierce, which is how we like it.
But hopefully I will keep my place, so I can carry on being a goal machine.
