NEWPORT County AFC front man Danny Crow has backed his former strike partner Conor Washington to thrive at League One Peterborough United, writes Andrew Penman.
Crow, who has now shaken off a hip injury, knows all about Posh having spent three years there earlier in his career.
The 28-year-old striker was top scorer at London Road in the 2005/06 season with 17 goals and he is certain that Washington can enjoy similar success back home in Cambridgeshire.
“I’ve spoken to Conor a few times since he left and he seems to be settling in well,” said Crow.
“He scored a couple of goals in a reserve game and he tells us he’s got a new car and a boot boy now so he’s gone big time!
“The gaffer was desperate to keep hold of him and the lads didn’t want him to go but it’s a good deal for the club with Shaun coming to us as well.
“A few of the Peterborough players were surprised that he was allowed to leave so that shows what a good player we’ve signed.”
Crow sees similarities between Washington and Craig Mikail Smith, another former Peterborough front man who has gone on to play for Brighton & Hove Albion and Scotland.
“Conor reminds me so much of Craig Mikail Smith because he’s so quick and creates so many chances, said Crow.
“He doubts himself. He scored two goals the other night and missed a one-on-one and all he thinks about is the one-on-one.
“But Peterborough create a lot of chances and he’ll get goals and step up again. I think he can play at a higher level and I hope he does.”
Crow is hoping to feature in Tuesday night’s home clash with AFC Wimbledon, weather permitting, and he’s delighted to have got over his injury.
“I felt a twinge in my hip in training and it’s been stiff but the physio has been helping me out and I’ve been working hard,” he said.
“I just want to play football really so it’s been a frustrating couple of weeks but I started training again on Wednesday.
“It was nice to get out in the rain with the boys again and get to know the new players as well. Hopefully I can play a part next week.”
