THREE top Torfaen boxers are in action this weekend as the build-up to this summer’s Commonwealth Games gathers pace, writes Andrew Penman.

With women’s boxing a part of the Commonwealths for the first time in Glasgow there is a big opportunity for Torfaen Warriors pair Becky Price and Ashley Brace.

Both are in action in Gifach Goch tonight and Brace also boxes in Gorseinon before both fly out to Bulgaria for more action next week.

They are preparing for next month’s Welsh Championships when the winners will be selected to fight at the Commonwealth Games.

Two-time former Welsh champion Price fights at 60kg, while Brace fights at 51kg.

Fellow Torfaen prospect Dino Smith won the Welsh Youth Championships at 69kg last week and the box-off against fighters a year older than him to qualify for the British Championships in Scotland next month.

He flies out to Oslo today after being selected to fight for Great Britain against Norway tomorrow.

Smith, who fights at 70kg, faces a tough test against 17-year-old home favourite Martin Larsen.

He is the only Welshman in the six-strong team flying out to Norway and Torfaen Warriors coach Simon Weaver is proud to have the club represented on the international stage once again.

“It is great for a small club like ours to have so many top fighters competing all over the world,” said Weaver.

“Dino is doing so well and it’s a great achievement to represent GB. And the next few months are very important for Ashley and Becky as they aim to make the Commonwealth Games.”
