IT’S tight at the bottom of the Swalec Championship and Newbridge intend to steer clear of a tense relegation dogfight, writes Chris Kirwan.
The Welfare Ground outfit are comfortably mid-table at the moment – and that’s the way they hope it will stay.
‘Bridge host Llanharan tomorrow afternoon and a victory would see them leapfrog the visitors into eighth place.
But more importantly the points would ease fears of being dragged into a battle with the three relegation-threatened Bs of Bonyman, Beddau and Blackwood.
Newbridge were overpowered 30-3 by Cardiff at the Arms Park in the Swalec Cup last weekend and are looking for their first league win since beating Blackwood at Glan-yr-Afon Park on December 7.
But Llanharan’s wait for a Championship success is even longer – they made a stunning start to the season (including a 34-27 win against ‘Bridge at the Dairy Field) but their last victory was against Bridgend Athletic on October 26.
One side will be breathing slightly easier come 4pm while the other will be nervously looking over their shoulder.
Other Championship fixtures: Beddau v Bargoed, Cardiff Met v Narberth, Tata Steel v Bridgend Athletic, Tondu v Bonymaen.
- Pontypool have filled a blank weekend by arranging a friendly against Premiership strugglers Aberavon tomorrow afternoon (kick-off 2.30pm).
Pooler were meant to be hosting RGC 1404 but the north Walians instead stop at Ebbw Vale for a rearranged Swalec Cup tie at Eugene Cross Park.
Knockout rugby also took precedence over the Wizards’ league clash with Pontypridd (who play Newport) so Aberavon, who have won five of their last six, will instead head to Pontypool Park.
Admission is free for season ticket holders and general admission is £5.
