Wales U20s’ hopes of getting their RBS 6 Nations campaign back on track after defeat to France were blown away by a rampant England in Newcastle.
The hosts played with pace and power that coach Byron Hayward’s Wales just couldn’t live with and the game was over as a contest well before half time.
Wales were behind within seconds when England were awarded a penalty after kicking off and outside half Billy Burns did the honours.
A few minutes later it was 10-0 when scrum half Henry Taylor went in under the posts following some great handling. Burns slotting over the kick.
As Wales went through some phases, Dragons centre Jack Dixon started to cause the hosts’ defence some problems with his power.
And the visitors were enjoying dominance at the scrum.
But any hopes of a Welsh comeback were thwarted when hooker Harry Thacker went over for the hosts to give them a healthy 17-0 lead.
Then the English forwards bared their teeth, driving over from a lineout for openside Gus Jones to touch down.
Thacker bagged his second just after the half hour and England were running away with it at 31-0. Within minutes Jones got his second to make the half time score 38-0.
Wales started the second half with more intent but some poor defending let England winger Zach Kibirige go over with a solo effort.
Wales’ Wil Boyd was yellow carded for a tip tackle and on 60 minutes England were 55-0 ahead.
Wales were awarded a penalty try for a tackle off the ball which at least got them off the mark. But it was little consolation in a match that saw them completely outplayed.
The Welsh scrum was impressive throughout but that apart this was a ten-try hammering the men in red will want to forget.
