FORMER Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Bradley Pryce is aiming to celebrate his 33rd birthday with victory over Latvian Raimond Snieze at the Newport Centre tonight, writes Andrew Penman.
The ex-Team Calzaghe fighter from Newbridge has lost six of his last seven fights but is still targeting titles with new trainer Jamie Arthur.
“I’ve had some tough fights but hopefully I’ll get a win here and I can build on that and look towards titles,” said Pryce.
“I don’t want to go down the journeyman path. I want to work towards a title at welterweight.
“I’ve never really taken the sport seriously before or been willing to learn but Jamie is technically very good and he’s teaching me a lot,” he added.
“I’m working on what I’m doing wrong and learning, which I probably should have been doing aged ten and not when I’m 32 and nearly 33.”
Pryce admits he doesn’t know too much about Snieze but he’s expecting to win over four rounds tonight.
“He was supposed to be fighting Aled Cook but Aled had to pull out so they asked me to step in,” he said.
“I’m not one to say no to a fight so I said yes.
“I’m in OK shape and by rights I should be going in and doing a job on this guy.
“Four rounds doesn’t suit me really but if I don’t beat him I’ve got problems.
“I’m going to go out there, beat this guy and then celebrate my birthday on Saturday.”
Top of the bill on former world champion Steve Robinson’s debut show as a promoter is the rematch between Newport’s Jerome Samuels and Blackwood’s Dai Jones for the Welsh light-middleweight title.
And Cardiff’s Craig Kennedy also goes for a belt when he takes on durable Ugandan Moses Matovu over ten rounds for the Bronze British Masters title.
“We’ve got seven fights and they’re all good fights,” said matchmaker Steve Sims.
“The rematch with Jerome Samuels against Dai Jones is going to be a fantastic fight.
“It’s going to be a war for the Welsh title and everyone should come and watch it.
He added: “Craig Kennedy has got the toughest test of his career so far and we’ve got Bradley Pryce back in Newport and Kyle King versus Darren Pryce, Bradley’s younger brother.
“Tony Dixon, Danni Griffiths and Luke Robinson are also in action on the undercard and they will give the crowd great entertainment as well.”
