TOP scorer Chris Zebroski is aiming to fire Newport County AFC back up the League Two table after his match-winning display at Torquay United on Saturday, writes Andrew Penman.
Zebroski scored his tenth goal in 25 starts this season to seal three points against his former club at Plainmoor.
And, after seeing off the bottom club, he’s aiming to do the same to fellow relegation candidates Bury and Portsmouth at Rodney Parade this week.
“There are three points there for the taking against Bury and that’s our intention,” declared Zebroski ahead of tonight’s clash (kick-off 7.45pm).
“I wouldn’t say we can relax now but the lads needed that win.
“It was one win in 15 and it’s been a tough run. The performances have been there at times but the results haven’t and that affects confidence.
“The longer it goes on the harder it gets and it’s great to get the win and get that monkey off our backs.
“The supporters were our 12th man and we were delighted to get the win for them,” he added.
“It was nice to score against my old club and keep a clean sheet because we all worked hard.
“And it’s a foundation to build on now but we need to play just as well against Bury and Portsmouth to get another couple of wins.”
Zebroski knows the next two games will be just as tough as Saturday’s scrappy victory over the ten-men Gulls but he’s optimistic that the Exiles can end their campaign on a high.
“Torquay are fighting for their lives,” said the 27-year-old.
“I was chatting to one of their players on Friday night and I said ‘we need a win’ and he laughed and said ‘we really need a win!’
“They’d love to be where we are and Bury and Portsmouth will be the same.
“We had such a great start to the season and we were fourth at Boxing Day and to keep going down and down the table does get disheartening.
“We don’t want to waste all our hard work and we want to get back up that table.”
