THREE Gwent stars will be part of Wales’ seven-member squash squad for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Pontypool’s Dave Evans, a ten-time Welsh national champion, is joined by Scott Fitzgerald, also from Pontypool, and Newport’s Dave Haley.
Current Welsh number one Peter Creed from Caerphilly, Tesni Evans of Cardiff, Joel Makin from Pembrokeshire and Deon Saffrey from Barry make up the rest of Team Wales.
Evans has represented Wales at three previous Commonwealth Games
The 39-year-old former British Open winner, once ranked as high as third in the world, said: “I’m delighted and honoured to represent Wales at my fourth Games.
“I’m hoping to go at least a round further than I have done at previous games, where I’ve lost in three quarter-finals.
“The team has prepared very well for these Games and with luck on our side I do not see any reason why our athletes can’t come back with medals.”
The team will compete across four different events –ladies doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and singles.
Chris Jenkins, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales, said: “It’s fantastic to see squash back in the Team Wales line-up for the Commonwealth Games.
“The squad’s selection is testament to the hard-work and results that the players have achieved over the last year or so.
“We’re sending the full complement of sports to the Glasgow Games, the first time Wales will have done so for a considerable amount of time and we’re really excited to be able to support the squash players in their events.
“The team is gradually starting to take shape, and through our work in the community with the Queen’s Baton Relay we can really feel the momentum and support building week after week.”
Dave Evans will compete in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles, Creed in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles and the singles, Fitzgerald in the men’s doubles and singles, Haley the men’s doubles, Makin the singles.
While Tesni Evans competes in the ladies doubles, mixed doubles and singles and Saffrey in the ladies doubles, mixed doubles and singles.
