NATHAN Cleverly will today be announced as the latest fighter to join Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions.
The Argus can reveal that the 26-year old Cefn Fforest fighter will be in attendance today in Cardiff Bay as Hearn announces details of a show at the Motorpoint Arena on May 17.
European and British champion Lee Selby is set to headline and as exclusively revealed by Argus sport, Gavin Rees is set for a rematch with domestic rival Gary Buckland as Newbridge and Newport battle again.
However, as with the last high-profile signing to Matchroom, former world champion Ricky Burns, the switch is set to prompt a lengthy battle between promoters.
Cleverly has spent his entire professional career being promoted by Frank Warren and the message from his camp was unequivocally clear when contacted by Argus Sport.
“Nathan remains under contract with us and we will comment further in due course,” his spokesman told me.
Neither Matchroom or Cleverly were available for comment.
Cleverly hasn’t fought since September 2013 when he lost his WBO light heavyweight title to Sergey Kovalev.
He has expressed his intention to fight at cruiserweight, but is yet to lace up a glove in 2014.
