WITH just four months to go, sports minister John Griffiths has unveiled an eight-strong sports line up for this year’s Gemau Cymru.
Taking place from July 4 to July 6, Gemau Cymru is Wales’ biggest multi-sport event for young people, providing hundreds with the opportunity to compete at a national level in front of large supporting crowds. The 2014 programme boasts athletics, canoeing, gymnastics, netball, rugby sevens, triathlon and table tennis.
Wheelchair basketball will also ensure that disability sport is showcased during this year’s programme, with table tennis and gymnastics also integrating disability sections into their competitions.
The bilingual event – which will be based at flagship facilities across Cardiff – is organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru together with the Welsh Government and Sport Wales.
“For our young athletes, Gemau Cymru will be the pinnacle of the sporting year," said Griffiths.
"It will showcase the best of Welsh talent and I’m certain it will feature Commonwealth Games stars of the future.
"Originally developed to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012, I’m delighted that we’re able to give young people this opportunity again this year and I commend the sports involved for their input and support.”
In addition to championing the future Welsh sporting greats, Gemau Cymru will also present numerous opportunities for an army of volunteers, both young and old to get involved.
