I SEE that Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has labelled today’s game against us as the biggest in their season and it’s the same for us.
I was angry when I spoke to the media after the defeat to Plymouth on Tuesday but I stand by what I said then; we’re not safe yet!
If we can beat Wycombe today then we should be OK but if we lose then we’re going to be in real trouble.
That would leave us facing a really tough couple of weeks because we’re up against three teams who are going for promotion in Burton, York and Rochdale.
Everyone realises the situation we’re in and if they didn’t then they shouldn’t be at the football club.
They’re a good bunch of lads and we have to pull together for this game because we need a win to ensure that the club will be in League Two again next year.
I’ve played against Gareth a few times in my career at various clubs and he’s someone who always gave 100 per cent as a player.
He was an honest, hard-working pro and I think his team will be the same this afternoon.
You can see the traits of the manager in the teams they put out on the pitch and we’ll be in for a tough game.
It was a hard game down there on Boxing Day when we won 1-0 and I got the goal.
We dominated for an hour and got the three points but they battered us towards the end and this is a game we won’t be talking lightly even though they’re in real trouble at the bottom of the table.
That win was the high point of the season for us as a squad and probably for me as well, scoring such a great team goal.
I think that took us to fifth in the table and we were looking at maybe getting the third automatic promotion place at that point.
Since then as we all know things haven’t gone to plan and I’m not going to go over old ground because we all know the difficulties we’ve had over the past few months.
But there’s no excuse for some of the sloppy goals we’ve been giving away in the past few months.
We need to be more switched on at the back. If we hadn’t conceded those silly goals on Tuesday night we would have won 1-0 and that’s the bottom line.
There are so many games where we’ve lost by one goal and if we’d been able to stop gifting teams goals then we’d be much better off.
We don’t get given anything; we have to create great goals or score a worldy.
We’ve got to be like other sides and be much more switched on and more aggressive at the back.
We need to be stronger mentally and say to ourselves ‘we will not concede’ and then with the chances we do create we’ll improve.
That is something that the club needs to take into next season because at any level you can’t keep coming back when you go behind.
I’m hoping for a win for us today and then three more points for the mighty Liverpool tomorrow.
I’ll be watching that game hoping my team take a big stride towards a first league title since 1990.
I was just ten then and it makes me feel like a kid again watching Brendan Rodgers’ team playing such good football and blasting the opposition off the park.
Hopefully the County fans will be just as happy tonight and it’s important that we play our part in remembering the victims of the Hillsborough disaster with a minute’s silence before the 3.07pm kick-off.
Finally I’d like to say a fond farewell to our football secretary and media officer Tim Lane who announced this week that he’ll be leaving at the end of the season.
It will be sad to see Tim go, just like it was when Mike Everett left the club at the end of last season after so many years.
Tim’s fitted in well with everyone here but he’s decided to move on and you get used to seeing people leave when you’re a footballer.
It happens every summer and it’s part and parcel of being at a football club but we all wish Tim good luck.
