IT'S been a good week for us with as we finally achieved what we set out to do at the start of the season.
It probably should have been two wins rather than two draws against Wimbledon and Burton but our main objective last summer was to stay in the League and we’ve done that.
We can always look back and think what could have been if we’d carried on our fantastic start to the season but we are where we are and it’s job done now.
We’ve got to focus on building towards next season now but the question I can’t answer is whether I’ll still be here.
I keep getting asked by the fans and I hear that it came up in the fans’ forum at Rodney Parade on Thursday as well, which is nice.
I’ve said before that I’d love to stay on and I still think I’ve got a lot to offer on the field but it’s not up to me.
The manager has said that he’s been impressed with my performances and obviously I’ve got to keep working hard and trying to impress.
Six weeks ago I didn’t think there was any chance but the gaffer has said ‘you never know’ so that has to be a good sign.
But the decision is not going to be made for a few weeks so I’ve got to be patient and hope that I’ve done enough to change his mind.
Whatever happens I’ll always give my all for this club and that’s the way it’s got to be for every player.
That was obviously the case for David Pipe as well but it wasn’t enough to for the manager to change his mind and we were all sad to see him leave the club this week.
He’ll be missed by everyone because he’s been a big part of the success of this club over the past few years and is a big character on and off the pitch.
Pipey and I have been travelling into training together and we’re good mates so we’ve obviously spoken a lot about the situation we’ve both found ourselves in over the past few months.
It’s been an awkward time for us and for the rest of the squad because we all get on and nobody likes to see their mates leave the club.
But it does happen and you get used to it as a professional footballer.
I’m sure Pipey will have no trouble in finding a new club and I know our lads won’t look forward to facing him in the opposing team if and when that happens.
As well as players playing for new contracts, me included, we have to give York a good test today and the same for Rochdale next week.
We owe it to the other promotion contenders to not let our standards slip even though we are safe now.
Last night was our final overnight trip of a long season and we’re well rested to rise to the challenge of facing an in-form side in York who are going for the play-offs.
They’re in their second season after promotion from the Conference and it’s an example we will look to follow next season.
We could have made the top-seven this season but my personal view is that we probably wouldn’t have been ready as a club for promotion this season.
It would have come too soon for us and we might be better off doing what York have done and consolidating in our first season before making a big push next year.
It can sometimes do more harm than good to run before you can walk and I believe it’s better to build steadily.
We’ll hopefully add some quality players in the summer and give it a real good go in our second season back in the Football League.
One player who is celebrating promotion again is Lee Evans at Wolves and we’re all delighted for him.
It will make his head even bigger but he’s a great lad really and it is great for him to be able to test himself in League One next season.
Conor Washington has a chance of going up to the Championship with Peterborough as well and we all hope he does it because it just shows that this club can spot talent and help progress people’s careers. Good luck Conor.
