DON’T be surprised if you see a few fishermen wearing crash helmets on the River Taff over the next six weeks.
West Indies star Darren Sammy has signed for Glamorgan on a short-term deal and should prove to be a massive hit in our NatWest T20 Blast campaign.
The Swalec Stadium won't be big enough if he hits top form over the coming weeks and his presence in our side should put a few bums on seats... and make sure that the crowd doesn't switch off!
He’s played in all forms of the game for the West Indies and skippered them to the World Twenty20 title in 2012 and to the semi-finals in Bangladesh earlier this year.
Sammy hits the ball with amazing power and has a strike rate of nearly 150 in T20 internationals, so I’m sure a few bowlers will be nervous when they see him heading for the middle.
He is a genuine world superstar and boosts a side that we already feel has the ability to go all the way in the tournament.
We made a great start at Hampshire before losing against Essex in Chelmsford but another win against Sussex under the lights in Cardiff this evening would make it a really good start.
Played three, won two from a tough opening against a trio of sides with a proven T20 record would represent an excellent opening to the campaign.
I’ve written before that I feel we have match winners with both bat and ball – a view backed up by the way that Jim Allenby, Jacques Rudolph, Michael Hogan and Graham Wagg have started the season – and if we can enjoy plenty of success at the Swalec Stadium then we should be among the leading contenders for the trophy.
We are still there or thereabouts in the County Championship but we were frustrated by the weather against Leicestershire this week.
They were eight down when our captain Mark Wallace was told he couldn’t use fast bowlers because of bad light.
Annoyingly their ninth-wicket pair stood firm and then the rain came but we have relied on the weather at times this season and what goes around comes around.
We are still in the mix in third place but 11 more points for a win would have really put the pressure on the top two of Hampshire and Worcestershire. We’ve just got to make sure we put in another good display when we start our next game in Essex on Sunday.
