PARALYMPIC gold and bronze medal winner Aled Davies has been given the honour of captaining Team Wales at his first Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in less than two months’ time.
The 23 year-old F42 discus thrower will lead the approximately 230-strong Wales squad in Glasgow as the nation competes across 17 sports in 11 days of competition.
Aled, also an SSE Ambassador for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was selected to compete for Team GB at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and came home with a medal from both is his event; bronze in the shot put and a gold medal and European record in the discus. Bridgend-born Aled then went on to win gold in both events at the World Championships in Lyon in 2013.
Already this season Aled has gained World Records in both of his events; breaking the discus world record which had previously stood for the last 12 years.
Team Wales Chef de Mission Brian Davies said: “Aled is not only a fantastic competitor but a very approachable and friendly character. He’s gained a lot of experience at major sporting events over the last few years and was propelled into the spotlight after his Paralympic medal wins meaning he’ll be able to impart a lot of valuable advice to other members of the team. We have every confidence that he will make a top class Team Captain.”
Team Captain of Team Wales, Aled Davies, said; “Over the last few weeks I have been thinking I just wanted to make the team.
I have managed to break a couple of world records but you never know until your name is on the paper.
“When I saw that it was great I can focus on my main goal of producing my best ever performance in Glasgow but to be captain of your country is something else. I am such a patriotic Welshman as it is and this is something I will cherish forever.”
