TWO Gwent sprinting maestros go in search of a first Royal Ascot win with their best ever chances next week.

David Evans and Ron Harris are resting their hopes on Patience Alexander and Majestic Hero respectively at the world famous meeting.

Both horses are just two years old, the youngest age equine competitors can take to the track in the UK and race over the minimum trip of five furlongs.

Patience Alexander was being aimed at the Queen Mary but her owner has another decent type for that in Anthem Alexander, so she will instead take in the Albany Stakes.

Her form looks rock solid as she beat Tiggy Wiggy in listed company, who won at the same level next time out.

Evans believes his highly progressive filly has improved again since that York outing, both physically and mentally.

"She works with the older horses and we've had no hiccups with her preparation. The other horses in the race have got her to worry about rather than the other way round," said Evans, whose yard is on the edge of Abergavenny.

Evans' 65,000gns purchase and Harris' 55,000gns Majestic Hero are considered cheap compared to the big buys of the Flat elite.

"They spend more on one horse than me and Dave would on all of ours!" said Harris.

Money cannot always buy talent and Harris feels his colt is perfectly capable of making his presence felt in the Windsor Castle.

Majestic Hero, a full brother to New Planet who was a good sprinter for John Quinn, bids to follow up a win at Chepstow where the ground was deemed unsuitable.

"I am sure he didn't like the ground there but class got him through," said Harris from his yard near Chepstow.

"He has a beautiful physique. David Probert rode him in a gallop one day and before he got on he didn't recognise he was a two year old."

Majestic Hero is related to a filly called Dandeena who Harris trained but met with a fatal injury at Bath.

"I am sure Majestic Hero will improve on faster ground. We also have Invincible Zeb in the Chesham," said Harris who hopes his string's run of fine form will continue well into next week.
