WALES' Commonwealth Games stars of the future compete in Wrexham today, writes Andrew Penman.

The Queensway International Stadium hosts the Welsh Under-20 and Under-17 Athletics Championships with a host of Newport Harriers and Cwnbran Harriers taking part in North Wales.

Newport’s Zakaryah Gordon-Evans, Ieuan Jones, Sam Rutherford, Ellis Wharton and Tyler Williams are joined by Cwmbran’s Elias Houston in the men’s under-17s 100m.

And Newport’s Tyler Williams runs in the 200m alongside Gordon-Evans, Houston, Rutherford and Wharton.

Thomas Arnold of Cwmbran goes in the 400m and Lewis Daniels in the 800m, while Newport’s Tom Jenkins runs in the 1500m.

Newport’s Ieuan Jones also competes in the shot and javelin.

In the women’s under-17 competition the 100m sees Newport’s Sarah Gibbs, Amelia Reynolds and Ffion Waddon go up against Cwmbran’s Millicent Fakande, who also competes in the long jump.

Gibbs, Reynolds and Waddon are joined by Cwmbran’s Eve Williams In the 200m.

Williams also runs in the 400m with Cwmbran’s under-15 runner Gabrielle Fakande, while teammate Isobel Parry-Jones goes in the 800m.

At under-20s level Newport’s Jake Dawkins and Jamie Kaged go in the 100m and 200m and teammate Sebastian Blanch runs in the 200m and 400m.

Newport’s Kyle Arnold competes in the sprint hurdles and long jump, when he will be up against Cwmbran’s Samuel Hughes who also goes in the triple jump.

The under-20s women’s competition sees Newport’s Madeline Baker run in the 800m and 1500m and Melissa Arthur competes in the long jump and the javelin.
