NEWPORT County AFC player-coach Mike Flynn says the Exiles are ready to cause another Capital One Cup shock at Reading.
Flynn and teammates have been drawn away to the Royals in the first round of the League Cup in the week beginning August 11 when they’ll be aiming to dump out another Championship club away from home.
Justin Edinburgh’s men won at Brighton & Hove Albion at the same stage last season before bowing out at Premier League West Bromwich Albion and Flynn fancies more of the same.
“It’s a great trip for the lads and for the supporters as well,” said Flynn.
“I’ve been lucky enough to play at the Madejski Stadium before and it is a fantastic place to play football, just like the Amex at Brighton was last year.
“It will be tough against a top Championship club away from home but we showed last season that on our day we can beat anyone and we’ll be aiming to cause another shock.”
The match will be a special occasion for Reading's Newport-born defender Chris Gunter as the Wales international faces his hometown club.
Fellow Welsh international Hal Robson-Kanu is also in the Royals ranks alongside Russian star Pavel Pogrebnyak and Dutch international Royston Drenthe.
The meeting in the Capital One Cup will be the 91st between the two clubs, with the first coming back in August 1920 in the Division Three (South) when Reading won 1-0.
August 1970 saw the only meeting between the sides in the League Cup and County enjoyed a 2-1 home win.
This will be the first game between the two clubs since they clashed in the old Division Three in March 1986, when Reading earned a 2-0 win.
The Championship side finished seventh last season, narrowly missing out on the play-offs and Nigel Adkins’ men will be a good test for Edinburgh’s squad at the start of the 2014/15 season.
Sponsors Capital One have announced that all first round fixtures in this season's competition will have a special discount for children.
The 'Capital One Kids for £1' promotion will give the opportunity for any fan buying a full-price adult ticket the right to buy a maximum of five child tickets for £1 each.
“That’s great news for our supporters and hopefully we can take a big following down the M4 to Reading,” added Flynn.
“Our away support is second to none and they are so important to us as a team.”
County will learn the League Two fixture list at 9am this morning.
“I can’t wait to find out,” said Flynn. “Even though the World Cup is on at the moment this is the day every football fan looks forward to every summer.
“The fixtures coming out means you can start to plan your season and us footballers are no different.”
