CEFN Fforest boxer Robbie Turley will have revenge on his mind when he takes on hometown hero Dai Davies in Merthyr next month.
The pair clash at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre on Friday, July 11, as Turley challenges Davies for his Welsh featherweight title.
And Turley is convinced that he can avenge his defeat in the pair’s first meeting for the same belt in Newport five years ago.
On that occasion Turley was stopped due to a cut eyebrow at the end of the ninth round.
But, after spending more than two years out of the ring due to an issue with a routine brain scan, the St Joseph’s fighter is eager to make up for lost time.
“I’m looking forward to it. It’s a good opportunity,” said the 27-year-old.
“He cut me early on last time and it was my first ten-rounder so I got a bit worried and the plan went out of the window.
“Hopefully I can put it right this time. I was a boy then but I’m a man now; I’ve been in many more ten-rounders with good fighters and I want my first title back after the long break I had.
“I can’t wait really because he’s in his own backyard and I know he’s going to come to fight so it should be a cracker.
“He’s the champion at home so I know I’ve got to win well but training has gone well, sparring has been good and I’m ready.”
If he gets a win over Davies, Turley is hoping for a British title shot at super-bantamweight.
“I’m coming up a weight for this fight but I’m going to carry on the rest of my career at super-bantamweight and hopefully I’ll get a British title shot after this fight,” he said.
“I want to win titles and carry on where I left off and I’m buzzing.
“I didn’t think I was going to box again at one point so to have this opportunity in my third fight back is great.”
Fellow St Joes fighter Frankie Borg is also on the bill on July 11 when he takes on Sheffield’s Wayne Reed.
“I’m looking forward to being back in action,” said Borg, the Welsh middleweight champ.
“It is just a four-rounder to keep me ticking over and then I can have a little break.
“Hopefully I get the job done early and I can watch James Lilley and Luke Osman before taking on the winner next time out.
“I’m in good shape and I’m looking forward to this fight and then taking on Lilley or Osman and moving onto bigger and better things.”
Also on the bill is Newport welterweight Adam Goldsmith who takes on Stuart Brewer of Penygraig.
