TALENTED teenagers Kody Davies and Lauren Price are looking forward to the experience of a lifetime as they prepare to represent Wales at Glasgow 2014, writes Andrew Penman.
The pair, both aged 19, are part of what has been described as Wales’ best-ever Commonwealth Games boxing team.
National coach Colin Jones believes that every member of his squad could come back with a medal with the likes of Andrew Selby, Fred Evans and Sean McGoldrick the leading lights.
Pontllanfraith heavyweight Davies is certain that the Welsh boxers can dominate in Glasgow next month.
“It’s been a big build-up and we’re looking forward to it but we’re still working hard as well,” he said.
“This is the best shape I’ve ever been in and it’s great to be part of such a strong team. I’m sure we’re going to bring back lots of medals.
“There’s obviously pressure on us but I’m only 19 and this is my first Commonwealth Games and I’m looking to enjoy the experience. Time is on my side.”
Time is also on the side of Bargoed’s Price, who is delighted to be making a bit of history as women’s boxing is introduced to the Commonwealths for the first time.
“It will be a really great experience for the whole team and especially the three of us women,” she said.
“It took off in the Olympics and I think the Commonwealths will be another big boost for women’s boxing.
“I think we can all come back with medals because this is the strongest boxing team Wales has ever taken to the Commonwealth Games,” she added.
“We’ve got Andrew Selby who is number one in the world, Fred Evans who won a silver medal at London 2012 and Sean McGoldrick who won gold in Delhi four years ago.
“Obviously they’ve been there before to the Commonwealths and the Olympics so they’re helping the rest of us through it.
“We look up to them and that’s what we need going up to Glasgow.”
Price is expecting the English and Canadian boxers to provide her biggest tests in the 75kg category.
“England’s Savannah Marshall will probably be the biggest threat, alongside the Canadians,” she said. “But I’m just going to take it one fight at a time and enjoy it.”
