AWARD-WINNING Newport trainer Tony Borg believes all three of his boxers can win medals at next month’s Commonwealth Games.
Borg is backing Sean McGoldrick, Andrew Selby and Joe Cordina, all of whom train with him at St Joseph’s gym, to bring home medals from Glasgow.
McGoldrick will defend the 56kg title he won in Delhi four years ago while two-time European champion Selby and rising star Cordina go for gold at 52kg and 60kg respectively.
Borg is also convinced that his former charge Fred Evans will be on the podium and he says that Newport should be proud of its amateur boxing stars.
“The three of them are all going there as medal hopes,” said Borg. “They’re not there to make up the numbers.
“Sean is reigning gold medallist, Andrew is number one in the world and Joe is a star in the making so I expect a lot from them.
“It would be great to have three boxers from one city but to have three from one gym, and Fred Evans who used to train here, all going to the Games is fantastic.
“And if we can get three medals as well then it would be a great achievement from them and for the gym.”
Borg says that recent changes to the scoring system will work in McGoldrick’s favour in Scotland.
“Sean was totally under-estimated last time round,” said the former Wales coach of the year.
“Nobody gave him a chance of winning and, to be honest, I didn’t think he could win gold.
“He was just a young kid, still at school, but he did brilliantly and at 22 now he’s a different person.
“Four years ago he was coming from school to train and in those days amateur boxing didn’t really suit Sean’s style.
“Boxing for the computer and getting two or three points off then staying out of danger in the last round wasn’t Sean’s game.
“But we worked on it and he knew he had to adapt to win medals.
“Now everything has gone full circle and it’s come back round to Sean’s way so he’s had to think back to when he was a big strong puncher as a kid.
“He stopped a guy in Canada recently so he’s in good shape.”
And Borg also has high expectations of Selby, Cordina and London 2012 silver medallist Evans.
“At the Olympics Andrew had a tough draw and just didn’t produce his best,” said Borg.
“He can use that disappointment in Glasgow and he’s got to be the favourite to win gold this time round.
“I’d be very surprised if Fred didn’t medal as well because he’s got the talent,” he added.
“And Joe has always gone slightly under the radar but he’s a real talent and on the right day, with the right draw, I’m pretty certain he can medal too.”
