IT HAS been an outstanding season of netball for the players at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls.
On Tuesday, June 17, HMSG picked up awards in every category at the annual presentation evening for the Wye Valley Netball League, held at Monmouth Rugby Club.
The first VII led the way, collecting the Wye Valley League Cup for winning the league from the 12 participating teams and the school's under-15 team were awarded the runners’ up trophy in the plate competition.
The final award of the evening was for player of the league, voted by the umpires during the season. Out of around 150 players who took part in the League, Year 10 pupil Sereima Masiwini was awarded this prestigious trophy.
She is the third girl from HMSG to win this award, following in the footsteps of former netball captain and head girl, Molly Pike and first VII player Elana Dimmer.
Having won the county title back in November, the 1st VII represented South East Wales at the U18 National Schools Championships, claiming the runners up spot.
The under-16 team additionally claimed their respective county title and also represented South East Wales at the national finals, where they finished a creditable fourth.
Evie O’Connor was awarded a place in the top 20 players and HMSG were one of only two schools in the whole of Wales to have a team in each competition.
O’Connor has had an outstanding season; she has been a member of the under-15 Welsh squad and played in the European Invitational Championships where she won a silver medal.
She also secured a place in the South East Wales under-16 team and was awarded player of the year at the recent awards ceremony, as well as cementing her place in the under-16 South East Wales performance squad, along with Annabel Quan.
Other county players this season were Bella Mossman, Alison Brown, Poppy Thompson, Holly Hall and Emanuella Kefalas, who were selected to play for South East Wales under-18s, while Thompson and Hall maintained their places in the South East Wales Performance HUB.
At the recent South East Wales awards ceremony, Hall was awarded the most improved under-18 A team player and Kefalas claimed the same award for the under-18 B team.
Other notable performances this year have been by the under-15 team who won the annual Habs 7 tournament, remaining unbeaten throughout it, the under-13 team who remained unbeaten all season and the under-12 team who won their county tournament to become South East Wales Champions.
