TORFAEN Tigers continued their winning run in the Welsh Conference South with a scrappy 36-14 win over Cardiff Spartans.
The game was overshadowed by a neck injury suffered by Spartans forward Luke Jones, who was treated for an hour by paramedics.
The Tigers started with a bang with skipper Louie Pengelly crossing in the opening set. He was quickly followed over the whitewash by loose forward Mike Edwards, winger Sam Hancox and half back Ryan Bates.
Mike Davies converted all four before Tom Mace crossed against the run of play for the visitors to make it 24-4.
It was a scrappy affair when the game restarted after Jones' injury with both sides struggling to find any rhythm, the events clearly playing on minds.
The Tigers crossed through stand off Dai Thomas, Davies again converting, then the Spartans then crossed through prop Fraser Young, playing on loan against his parent club, and winger Liam Maule, Bradley Williams improving both.
Shaun Watkins then crossed for Torfaen but was deemed to have been held up before crossing legitimately 30seconds later, Dai Thomas adding the goal to make the full-time score 36-14.
Tigers coach Jamie Williams said: "We started well and our shape and structure looked good. We need a massive improvement in performance for our trip to the Wolves next week."
On Saturday, the Tigers head to Senghenydd RFC to face impressive newcomers Aber Valley Wolves with the winner almost certain to finish top of the table and secure a home playoff fixture.
- Sixth-placed Newport Titans host Cardiff Demons in Maesglas tomorrow evening (kick-off 7pm).
