CEFN Fforest fighter Robbie Turley failed in his bid to win the Welsh featherweight title in Merthyr as hometown hero Dai Davies repeated his triumph of five years ago.
Turley was holding his own against the champion until a brutal round seven when Davies pinned him on the ropes for over a minute until the bell intervened.
St Joseph’s trainer Tony Borg gave his man another round but with Turley seemingly having punched himself out he threw in the towel at the end of the eighth.
In the Sanigar Events bill dubbed Repeat or Revenge it was a repeat of Davies’ stoppage win over Turley in Newport in 2009.
Borg says 27-year-old Turley, who suffered his fifth defeat as a pro, will now stick to the super-bantamweight division where he has previously won the Welsh and Celtic titles.
“To be honest, he’s just not a featherweight,” said Borg.
“When he boxes at super-bantam he weighs in at 8st 10lb and he goes in to the ring at 9st 2lb or 9st 3lb but featherweight is just not his weight.
“He just looked flat in there and we’re very disappointed but we had to pull him out.
“His future is definitely at super-bantamweight.”
